The Inca Quarry Trek 4 Days is one of the most authentic and lesser-known trekking routes to Machu Picchu, ideal for travelers seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure rich in history, culture, and breathtaking Andean landscapes. Unlike the crowded Classic Inca Trail, this route follows ancient quarry paths once used by the Incas to carve and transport massive stone blocks, offering a deeper insight into Inca engineering and daily life.
This hidden trek takes you through high Andean valleys, cloud forests, and remote mountain scenery rarely seen by most visitors. Along the way, you’ll explore fascinating Inca quarry sites, original stone paths, and archaeological remains that reveal how the Incas shaped their empire. One of the highlights of the Inca Quarry Trek to Machu Picchu is its cultural immersion. The route passes near traditional Andean communities where farming and weaving traditions remain unchanged for generations. With expert local guides, you’ll learn about Andean cosmology, Inca construction techniques, and the spiritual significance of the mountains that surround you.
The journey culminates with a visit to Machu Picchu, the most iconic archaeological site in South America. Itinerary
On the first morning, we will embark on a 1 hour 45-minute drive to Soma village (3204 meters / 10512 feet), the starting point of our trek. Here, we’ll meet our horses, muleteers, and prepare the trekking equipment before having breakfast. We’ll set off early and follow a small valley to reach Perolniyoc, an Inca site perched atop a mountain.
Along the way, we’ll encounter a stunning waterfall, a prime spot for taking pictures. Upon reaching the Inca site, our guide will share its history with us. Afterward, we’ll continue to our first camp, where we’ll enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by our team in a dining tent with breathtaking views.
For the night, we’ll be camping in the great outdoors.
On the morning after a satisfying breakfast, we embark on a journey to reach the first pass named Pukaqasa (14,366 ft / 4379m), a hike that takes approximately 3 hours. At the top, we are greeted by stunning views of the Urubamba valley and the snow-capped mountains. After a 30-minute descent from the pass, we take a break for lunch.
We then ascend to the highest point of the trek, Kuichikasa (14,596 ft / 4,449m), a place where we can admire stunning panoramic views in every direction. A 2-hour, 30-minute descent follows.
To reach the gem of the Inca empire, we have to pass through “Puerta del Sol” or Intipunku in Quechua. From here, we are treated to breathtaking views of the Wakaywillka (La Verónica) peaks in the Sierra de Urubamba. After an additional 30-minute walk, we arrive at our next campsite called Choquetakarpo (11,874 ft / 3,619 m).
Accommodation: Campsite
Today’s excursion takes us on a journey to the Cachicata Quarries, located 8 kilometers from Ollantaytambo, for a 1-hour drive. As one of the most significant Inca quarries, Cachicata was a site where ancient Inca masons carved and polished the rock to construct the Temple of the Sun in Ollantaytambo. Our guide will share fascinating tales about this location. Afterwards, we embark on a 3-hour tour to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, home to the Inca city of Ollantaytambo. We will have lunch near the city before taking a train to Machu Picchu Town, where we will check into our pre-booked hotel.
Accommodation: Golden Sunrise Hotel *** or similar.
On our final day, we rise early, around 5 AM, to ensure a peaceful and uncrowded visit to Machu Picchu. We enjoy a quick breakfast before boarding a bus to the ancient citadel. Arriving at Machu Picchu with the sunrise, our knowledgeable guide takes us on a tour of the must-see sites and shares the rich history behind each one.
